Firefighter Friendly – Preschool

A firefighter wears gear to familiarize children with firefighters and emphasize that "firefighters are their friends." Additional safety information may include smoke alarms; toys and tools; and, what a firefighter does. Submit a Fire Program or Speaker Request.

Fire Station Tours – Kindergarten

Students experience first-hand "life at the fire station" and learn safety information that goes along with their classroom fire safety unit. Students also get to see firefighters in bunker gear and learn about the various trucks and equipment a firefighter uses. Additional safety information may include what's hot and what's not. The public education supervisor coordinates the program with kindergarten teachers.  

Fire Safety House – Second Grade

The FSH is a “hands on” learning house on wheels. Inside the house, children hunt for home hazards in a kitchen and living room; and, practice a fire escape from the bedroom. Firefighters use theater smoke, in the bedroom,, to safely simulate the conditions of a real fire while children get low and crawl to their best exit. In this case, the door is warm and students must exit through a window, which has a short ladder at the rear of the FSH. The public education supervisor coordinates the program with second grade teachers.

Aquafest – Third Grade

Stormwater staff facilitates a field day for Olathe third grade students on school play grounds or local parks. Educational events cover topics such as the water cycle, water conservation, pollution, and water sheds. The program administrator works with the science curriculum coordinator at Olathe District Schools to schedule the Aquafest events.

Fire Department – Third Graders Discover Fire & Life Safety

Third grade students participate in the "Discover Fire & Life Safety" program at the beginning of the school year. This four-week program, presented by the Olathe Fire Department, consists of weekly lessons with a take-home safety challenge. Based on completion, students may receive a safety challenge keychain coin award presented in front of their entire school grade. The Public Education Unit coordinates the program with third grade teachers.

Fire Department - Third Grade Adopt-A-School

This program compliments the Discover Fire and Life Safety program. On-duty fire crews visit schools three times to present fire and life safety lessons that allow students to interact with firefighters in a positive way. Fire department captains coordinate the program with third grade teachers.

Learning About Olathe – Third Grade

Third grade students enjoy an all-day field trip to City Hall. Students participate in a mock city council meeting in the City Council Chamber, visit activity stations representing a variety of city services, and learn about Public Works operations by watching various City vehicles and equipment. The program administrator contacts third grade teachers about this program.

Fire Department - Sixth Grade Fire Prevention

Students learn to distinguish between virtual and real-life fire behavior, develop an effective home escape plan and identify consequences of the misuse of fire. The Public Education Unit coordinates the program with physical education teachers.

Fire Department - Eighth Grade Hands-Only CPR

Students learn how to determine if someone needs CPR, the steps of CPR and how to effectively administer CPR. Additional safety information may be presented such as what to do for someone who is choking, what to do for an infant in cardiac arrest and what to do if someone is having a heart attack. The Public Education Unit coordinates the program with physical education teachers.

Kitchen Fire Safety – Middle School and High School Culinary/Family and Consumer Science Classes

A fire department member visits culinary/FACS classes to show students how to prevent kitchen fires and burn injuries. The public education supervisor coordinates the program with teachers.
