What is backflow?
Backflow is the reversal of flow in a water system from the normal or intended direction of flow, possibly back into the water system. It creates the opportunity for potential contaminants and pollutants from private plumbing connections in your home or business to enter the main water distribution system.
What is cross connection?
Cross Connection control is any connection between the public water supply and a source of contamination or pollution. Potential commercial/residential hazards:
- Irrigation systems
- Fire sprinkler systems
- Boilers
- Shampoo sinks
- Carbonators
When are backflow tests due?
Testing is due at the installation of a new device, and retesting is based on the original install date. Aqua Backflow will send out reminder letters prior to due dates.
Why is backflow testing required?
With time and wear, devices can fail and no longer prevent backflow from occurring. By having a backflow preventer installed and tested annually, it helps the City to ensure safe water for our customers by eliminating the potential risk of Cross Connection.
What if I don't use my irrigation system?
The City no longer requires testing of residential irrigation backflow devices, but it is still highly recommended. If you would like to remove or cap off your system permanently, an Individual Trade Permit is required.
