Olathe Parks & Rec offers a variety of swim lessons and water safety programs for participants of all ages and skill levels.

Lessons are conveniently held at the Olathe Community Center indoor pool year-round and at outdoor pools during outdoor pool season. Parent-led, private and group lessons are available.

Choose Olathe Parks & Rec

  • Instructor to student ratio is 1:4
  • Lead instructors have Red Cross Instructor Certification
  • Instructors are certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED and attend seasonal in-services for ongoing training, instruction and evaluation
  • Each facility has a heated pool, locker rooms and family change rooms

#SwimSafeOlathe

#SwimSafeOlathe is a program designed to help track participants' progress as they complete each level of swim lessons through Olathe Parks & Rec. When a participant completes a session, the swim instructor will evaluate their skill level and determine if they should move to the next level. Each time a session is successfully completed, participants will receive a colored band that corresponds with that level.

Infant Fun Beginner – Ages 6 months to 1.5 years

1:8 Teacher to Student Ratio

In this class infants get the opportunity to explore the water while being accompanied by an adult. While engaging in structured play, adults learn how to engage with their children while also teaching basic swimming skills including:

  • Safety Reminders
  • How to have fun in the water
  • Sing and play
  • Water exploration
  • Laying on front/back comfortably
  • Mouth bubbles
  • Reaching arms for toys
  • Kicking motion on front/back

Infant Fun Advanced – Ages 1.5 to 3 years

1:80 Teacher to Student Ratio 

In this class infants and toddlers learn basic swimming skills while being accompanied by an adult. This class introduces students to a classroom environment and allows them to work with the instructor directly. While engaging in a group class setting, students will work on the following skills to pass this class:

  • Reinforce safety skills
  • Importance of teacher count down from the wall
  • Lifejackets usage
  • Group fun
  • Stations/independent time
  • Submerge face in water -Mouth/nose bubbles
  • Back float
  • Front arm movement (reaches)
  • Comfort with adult and teacher

Preschool Beginner – Ages 3 to 5 years

1:4 Teacher to Student Ratio 

This class is structured for those who have not had lessons before and/or are apprehensive around the water. Students will learn basic swimming skills including:

  • Entrance and exit methods
  • Blow mouth bubbles
  • Blow nose bubbles
  • Submerge face in water
  • Back float (assisted in deep) and back float independent in 6”
  • Flutter kicking
  • Front and back glide
  • Front crawl arm movement
  • Back crawl arm movement

Preschool Intermediate – Ages 3 to 5 years

1:4 Teacher to Student Ratio

Preschool Intermediate is designed for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and are looking to make progression on their skills. Skills needing to be accomplished to pass include:

  • Submerge underwater completely while understanding breath control
  • Front float (5 sec)
  • Back float (5-10 sec)
  • Front glide with flutter kicking
  • Front glide arm movement
  • Back glide with flutter kicking
  • Back glide with arm movement (straight arm)
  • Roll front to back
  • Treading arms
  • Travel from wall to instructor independently

Preschool Advanced – Ages 3 to 5 years

1:4 Teacher to Student Ratio

Preschool Advanced is designed with younger students that have demonstrated command of swimming  and are looking to develop their form and stamina. Students will be ready for Youth Intermediate after completing the following skills:

  • Traveling bobs (bobbing to safety)
  • Open eyes underwater
  • Front float (10 sec)
  • Back float (30 sec)
  • Combined front crawl 5-15 yd
  • Combined back crawl 5-15 yd (straight arm)
  • Front glide then roll to back float and kick
  • Slide glide movement and kicking
  • Back glide and kick on back for 15+ yd
  • Swim front to back float and swim front
  • Treading arms and legs (15-30 sec)
  • Dolphin movement
  • Understanding of whip kick on back
  • Breath control/jelly fish float (10-20 sec)
  • Jump in deep water and recover to safety

Youth Beginner – Ages 6 to 14 years

1:5 Teacher to Student Ratio
This class is structured for those who have not had lessons before and/or are apprehensive around the water. Students will learn basic swimming skills including:

Youth Intermediate – Ages 6 to 14 years

1:6 Teacher to Student Ratio

This class is designed for swimmers that have taken lessons or have developed skills independently and are looking for skill refinement. Skills needing to be accomplished to pass include:

  • Retrieve object from bottom of pool 4-6’
  • Combined front crawl with rotary breathing 25 yd
  • Combined back crawl 25 yd (bent arms)
  • Elementary backstroke 25 yd
  • Breaststroke kicking movement
  • Butterfly kicking movement 5-15 yd
  • Treading (1 min)
  • Seated head-first entry dive
  • Kneeling head-first entry dive

Youth Advanced – Ages 6 to 14 years

1:6 Teacher to Student Ratio

In this class students will build on skills learned in Youth Intermediate and continue building stamina and technique for all swimming strokes. Students will be ready for Youth Expert after completing the following skills:

  • Feet-first surface dive motion and retrieve object from bottom of 8’
  • Front crawl 50 yd
  • Back crawl 50 yd
  • Breaststroke 25 yd
  • Butterfly 15-25 yd
  • Treading (2 min)
  • Stride/compact head-first dive
  • Flip turns (front/back)

Youth Expert – Ages 6 to 14 years

1:8 Teacher to Student Ratio

This class is for those who have experience in competitive swimming. This is a fast pace course for those who are wanting to be challenged in the water and might want to venture into the world of lifeguarding. The skills required to pass this class include:

  • Freestyle 100 yd
  • Backstroke 100 yd
  • Breaststroke 100 yd
  • Butterfly 25-50 yd
  • Shallow angle dive/starting blocks
  • Open turns
  • Head or feet-first surface dive to bottom of pool and retrieve 10 lb brick from 10-12’
  • Back starts
  • 300 yd combination swim with flip turns
  • 100 IM
  • Treading (2 min without the use of hands)
  • Understanding of fitness in swimming including stretching, conditioning, routines, equipment usage
  • Understanding of correct pull outs and finishes for all strokes and stroke terminology
  • Safety training for swim coaches

Adult Beginner – Ages 15+

1:6 Teacher to Student Ratio

This class is structured for those who have not had lessons before and/or are apprehensive around the water. Students will learn basic swimming skills including

  • Water confidence
  • Understanding of jelly fish float
  • Floating on front and back
  • Breath control
  • Travel with kicking and breathing
  • Travel with arms, legs, breathing with any stroke

Adult Intermediate – Ages 15+

1:6 Teacher to Student Ratio

In this class students will build on skills learned in Adult Beginner and continue building stamina and technique for all swimming strokes. Skills needing to be accomplished to pass include:

  • Treading
  • Techniques for all strokes
  • Endurance building
  • As needed for fitness
  • Understanding of butterfly
  • Fitness swimming for front crawl, backcrawl, and breaststroke
  • Open turns
Lifeguard and Water Park Training – Ages 15+

Students will prepare for a fun and rewarding job as a lifeguard. Upon successfully completing the course, students will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED, as well as Waterpark and Waterfront Lifeguarding.

Those who are hired by the City of Olathe may be eligible for reimbursement if they meet work and hour requirements.

Water Safety Instructor – Ages 15+

This class uses the American Red Cross Blended Learning curriculum to prepare students to teach swim lessons and other Red Cross safety programs.
