New Year’s Eve is one of the deadliest days of the year for drunk driving.

Beginning Friday, December 26th, 2025, the Olathe Police Department, along with numerous other police agencies across Kansas, will participate in the 2025 Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign. This special traffic enforcement targets impaired driving through enforcement and education. The campaign will conclude on Friday, January 2nd, 2026.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes – that’s one person every 42 minutes.

If you’re drinking, don’t drive. Being a responsible driver and preventing tragedies is simple, starting with the decisions you make while celebrating the holidays:

  • Plan a safe ride home before the party. If you drink, don’t drive, call a ride-share, taxi or a sober friend.
  • If someone has been drinking, take their keys and arrange a sober ride home.
  • If you see an impaired driver, contact local law enforcement.

This campaign is grant funded through the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).

The Olathe Police Department encourages all citizens to drive responsibly and have a safe holiday.
