Variety KC Helps Bring Water Wheelchairs To All Olathe Aquatic Facilities

These chairs allow water access to all Olathe residents through the zero-depth entry.

The first one is now available at the Olathe Community Center with chairs coming to Black Bob Bay, Oregon Trail Pool, Mill Creek Pool, Frontier Pool and the Beach at Lake Olathe in the summer of 2025!

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Variety KC to enhance accessibility in our facilities,” City of Olathe Recreation Manager Shannan Broughton said. “This collaboration represents a meaningful step toward creating spaces where everyone, regardless of ability, feels welcome and empowered. Together with Variety KC, we are committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that our facilities meet the needs of all residents in our community. Olathe Parks & Rec is committed to assisting everyone in our community reach their full potential.” 

Variety KC Children’s Charity empowers children with special needs and disabilities, in the Greater Kansas City region by providing access to vital medical equipment for mobility, sensory, communication, safety, therapies and more. Previous partnerships with the City of Olathe include, installation of 90 communication boards at 45 Olathe parks and facilities to provide greater accessibility to community members with adaptive communication needs and helping to raise funds for the construction of the Miracle League Field at College Boulevard Activity Center.

"Variety KC is thrilled to continue our partnership with the City of Olathe to ensure all residents, regardless of ability, have equal access to recreational spaces,” Variety KC Community Liaison Officer Ali O’Grady said. “These water wheelchairs are an important step in creating a more inclusive community where everyone can enjoy the local aquatic facilities. We look forward to seeing more families experience the joy and freedom that comes with these new resources, and we remain committed to making Olathe a more accessible place for all."
