Olathe opens second Food Waste Drop-Off location at Black Bob Park
The City of Olathe opened a second food waste drop-off location due to high demand and success of the program. This new location opened on November 27 at Black Bob Park, helping serve the eastern side of Olathe.
On May 1, 2023, the City of Olathe launched a food waste program, allowing residents to drop off food waste at the Olathe Community Recycling Center food waste kiosk at no charge. Residents dropped off 38,220 pounds of food waste in its inaugural year. As we close out 2024, estimates suggest the site will surpass 80,000 pounds of food waste, more than doubling the previous year's collection.
Solid Waste Manager, Darren Gilbert commented, “This remarkable milestone highlights not only the program's success but also the dedication of Olathe residents to sustainable practices. Together, we are reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the environment for future generations.”
The new location ensures greater accessibility for all residents, making it even easier to participate in our efforts to reduce food waste and its environmental impact. The new site will be open during park hours and closely monitored by Solid Waste staff.
